The First Sleep Pillow: How Scent Brought Me Back to Peace
The First Sleep Pillow: How a Scent Gave Me Comfort
It was the middle of the night.
I was lying awake.
My heart was racing.
My thoughts were spinning.
Tears were streaming down my face.
Everything inside me was asking:
“Why isn’t this working…?”
Beside me was a small linen pouch filled with herbs.
A sleep pillow.
I picked it up and took a deep breath.
Not because I thought it would work miracles.
Not because I expected to fall asleep immediately.
But because I was searching for something…
Something to hold on to.
And that is what this little pillow gave me.
It didn’t solve my problems.
It didn’t take away my sadness.
But the scent of chamomile, and later lavender…
reminded me that I wasn’t alone.
That there is something greater than what we can see.
And that even in the darkest nights, the smallest things can bring comfort.
How It Began
I made the first sleep pillow in Belgium.
I was studying herbalism, and one of the assignments was to create a sleep pillow.
The first pillow was made with sheep’s wool and chamomile.
Simple.
But because I wanted it to become something truly personal, I started experimenting.
I tried kapok. A light, soft, natural fibre from the kapok tree. Kapok is airy, hypoallergenic, gentle, and resilient.
I still often alternate between kapok and sheep’s wool.
Two natural materials.
I wanted to create the perfect little pouch.
I tested different sizes and materials. Always natural. Always in line with Árbol.
Pouches made from linen, jute, and cotton.
I searched for the right filling. I looked for other herbs. Herbs that worked together and strengthened each other. Combinations and scents that complemented one another. And that had a powerful effect for the purpose I created them for.
I had a stamp with my logo hand-carved.
No mass production.
No rush.
Every pouch received that stamp.
It gave it that little something extra.
Not just a pouch, but something with a soul.
And love.
The first time I held the finished piece in my hands, it felt magical.
Not perfect.
But real.
And Then Came July…
It was 2025.
We spent the entire month of July in the house in Calpe.
I may have bought it, but we had shaped it together.
At first, it was just the two of us.
Later, two of her friends joined us, along with seven children.
It started peacefully.
Then… it became intense.
I made a little pillow for everyone. Something special to take home. But looking back now, perhaps I was mostly making it for myself too.
It became my anchor.
Especially during the moments when we were already separated, but still living under the same roof.
She downstairs.
Me upstairs.
And when I cried because of everything that wasn’t working out, I reached for that little pillow.
In Calpe, I started experimenting with lavender.
I went to a local herbalist, bought herbs, and created a new collection of pillows.
With the Árbol logo.
And above all…
with love.
Each pillow carried a little piece of my story.
What it has become now
Back in Belgium, I wanted more.
I started developing my own Árbol de la Vida blends.
Not just one scent, but several.
Seven themed collections: for sleep, calm, energy, athletes, and much more.
More about that later.
All pillows are refillable because herbs lose their scent and effectiveness after around three to six months.
It is not magic that solves all your problems.
But it is a gentle anchor.
Something that whispers:
You don’t have to do this alone.
And yes…
sometimes I still lie awake at night.
But that little pillow remains my anchor.
And the knowing that, even in the middle of a storm, something small can bring comfort.
What I Want You to Know
My sleep pillows do not solve problems. They do not suddenly make sleepless nights easy.
But the herbs and the pillow…
Yes, they can help you feel calmer. They can offer comfort.
But magic? They don’t create miracles.
For me, it is a reminder.
That I am not alone.
That there is magic in small things.
A scent.
A ritual.
A piece of nature in your hands.
I believe there is something greater than us. Something that carries us when, for a moment, we can no longer carry ourselves.
That feeling…
That is what I want to share with every product from Árbol de la Vida.
